How to Take the Perfect Photo of Your Pet
By The Fence Studio · 28 May 2026

The single biggest factor in a stunning pet portrait is the photo you start with. The good news? You almost certainly already have a phone capable of taking exactly what our artists need.
Find good light
Natural daylight is your best friend. Position your pet near a window or step outside into soft, shaded light. Avoid harsh midday sun and on-camera flash, which flatten detail and wash out fur.
Get down to their level
Crouch or sit so the camera is at your pet's eye level. This creates a connection in the final portrait and avoids the distortion you get shooting down from above.
Quick checklist
- Eyes in sharp focus
- Whole face visible, not turned away
- Bright, even lighting
- Highest-resolution photo you have
